The Roots of Odopa Cultural Group
Music has proven to be an impressive vehicle for education and communication in societies all over the world. One of the most recognised methods of transforming the lives of people is Afrikan Drumming & Dancing.
Odopa explore the Afrikan dance technique through a variety of movements based on traditional practices on the continent of Mother Afrika. Learn the movements that reflect the lives of a people, the culture of a society, and songs, stories, and drum patterns that uplift the soul of an identity.
Afrikan drums and other percussion instruments combined in a unique ensemble lift up souls of participants, improve their concentration, coordination, and community cohesion. Odopa Cultural Group proposes an Afrikan Drumming session for young people and senior citizens in Manchester Group was founded in 2004. The Founder, Cultural Educationalist and trained Social Worker Abena Agyeman envisioned a world of cultures learning more about Afrikan culture through the arts and related disciplines.
Odopa Cultural Group works mainly but not exclusively in schools and community arts centres introducing, demonstrating and teaching aspects of Afrikan culture, especially the music, visual arts, drama, storytelling and dance (and associated arts) of West Afrika. It acts as a producing and performing company of innovative traditional and contemporary Afrikan dance and music for the community, mid scale and large scale venues. It tours nationally and internationally and promotes cultural exchanges between Afrika and other parts of the World. Odopa aim is to advance the education of the public concerning Afrika and its art, anthropology and culture. Our core project is a programme of participatory combined arts workshop that we run at various Community Centres and in schools.
